I thought today that I wouldn't really write anything on Easter (I rather forgot to mention Good Friday). In truth, plenty of pastors and priests wills be weighing in on the matter today. For a change I'm going to just sit quietly and hope.
So instead I thought I'd just put up the incomparable 'Et Resurrexit' from Bach's Bm Mass - which when heard after the 'Et Incarnatus' and 'Crucifixus' dark, slow and harmonically confusing movements, really does demonstrate the magnitude of this new life. Resurrection as a kick in the teeth.
Just like Josef's words from Schleiermacher's 'Christmas Eve, Dialogue on the Incarnation' says'
"Now just think what lovely music [the women] could have sung for you, in which all the piety of the discourse could have dwelt far more profoundly."
and criticises the 'contriving, reflective, dialectical, superintellectual'.
Quite right too.
